WebMCP for AI assistants

Belgium in Maps exposes a small, reviewed set of in-browser tools so compatible assistants can use the atlas without guessing its interface or bypassing its evidence.

What an assistant can do

A compatible assistant can search indicators and places, open an exact atlas state or municipality profile, describe the current map, compare selected places, read complete source details and request the same attributed PNG export available to people.

  • belgium_maps.search_indicators and belgium_maps.search_places return bounded matches.
  • belgium_maps.build_atlas_link creates a validated exact view; belgium_maps.list_dataset_downloads returns published immutable CSVs.
  • belgium_maps.open_view and belgium_maps.open_place_profile change the visible page only after validated input.
  • belgium_maps.describe_view, belgium_maps.compare_places and belgium_maps.read_source_details preserve period, unit, geography, coverage and source.
  • belgium_maps.export_png uses the reviewed map and chart exporter; it downloads an attributed PNG in the browser.

How it works

The tools use the experimental WebMCP imperative API, document.modelContext. They are registered only when a compatible browser exposes that API and while the relevant Belgium in Maps page is open. The normal website remains the complete fallback in every other browser.

Safety and privacy

Tool inputs are strictly bounded and resolved against the published catalogue. The tools do not accept arbitrary URLs, expose audience or contact data, access subscription records, send messages or call unpublished data services. Read actions are marked read-only; navigation and file export remain explicit visible actions. Publisher labels and other external text are treated as untrusted content.

Stable links, embeds and exports

Every tool response points back to a normal exact-state atlas URL. Source, period, unit, geographic scope and licence stay visible. Websites can use the reviewed HTTPS embed renderer and people can download the same PNG directly from the atlas.

Example requests

  • Find Belgian population-density indicators and open the latest municipality map.
  • Compare Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Liège in the current view and include the source.
  • Export the current map and distribution chart as a landscape PNG.
  • Explain the missing coverage and licence for this exact map.
